Volunteers feedback
Dear Hari and High Himalayan team,
Thank you for the warm welcome to your country. I appreciate the family-like atmosphere High Himalayan community project team provides as well as an avenue to meet like-minded friends in Nepal. I will never forget your hospitality and willingness to help me in all of my, trekking, sight-seeing and volunteering endeavors. I really felt like High Himalayan community project's first priority was to make sure all the volunteers were comfortable and happy. I know this was at least true for my experience.
Thanks for everything.

"I think this is a perfect opportunity to get out and help a group of people who have been through so much, and to live in a very different environment. I have a much greater understanding of disabled persons, and an appreciation of how life lived simply can be just as exciting. Anyone who has spent time with local rural Nepali families will know the excitement." Thank you Hari Krishna and family!!

Dear Hari Krishna +FAMILY!
Thank you for such a wonderful JOB!
Thank you for opening my eyes to the wonderful place that is Nepal. I have had a great experience.
The family stay was wonderful; it was so lonely to have a home away from home. Spending all day with the children made me feel like a child again. They are truly special, amazing and inspirational kids.
Sadly I have had to cut short but I can't wait to come back & play with the team again!!!!!
Thanks so much for looking after me, it made the world of difference! Top work" Dear Hari Brother."

"Teaching in Rural village Nepal was such a worthwhile experience, not only for me but for the kids I taught as well. The impact you make on the school is something that benefits the children massively, allowing them to experience fun and a different method of teaching. Volunteering is a great way to see the world, whilst benefiting others."

A smile on every face,
I was lucky to accidentally run into my Australian friend Lynn in Pokhara, who I met during my travels in India. When she told me that she is going to volunteer for the High Himalayan community welfare project I immediately contacted Hari, who is responsible for the project, and asked him to be a volunteer as well. He invited me to his home to have lunch, the traditional Nepali dish dal bhat and to provide me with information about the project and the general situation in the poor rural area of Nepal. He also introduced me to Gopal a friend of his, who comes from the small village Chaurkharka which is near the Tibetan border in the district of Rosuwa and which should be my home for the next month.
On the next day Gopal was so kind to pick me up at my guest house and together we drove to his village. I didn’t know what to expect but was happy to go. The first experience was the local bus from Kathmandu, which took us 6 hours to Kalkasthan. We went on the morning bus and it was amazing to have this beautiful view of the mountains on the way. The road was so treacherous I thought we were going to tip over and roll down the hill as we made our way there!
From Kalikasthan to Chaurkharka village we had to walk another 30 minutes. Yet I arrived safely and my host family was absolutely lovely. The only small difficulty at the beginning was the language. Since this was a new placement not many people spoke English.
At the school I was introduced to one of the teachers, Jhabaraj , who fast became a good friend and helped me to orient myself at school. Through him I met Roberto, who is a passionate committed and wonderful person. He also made it possible to build a new school in the poor village which enabled many kids to reach school easily as they did not have to walk for many hours to get there any more.
Everyday of teaching was so much fun :) on the way to the school and back I was greeted by all the children shouting “morning Miss” and they were so welcoming. I had brought some English books and was glad I did as I used those for all my lessons the whole three weeks. At first, the students were shy and it was daunting to walk into a classroom and expected to teach English with 30+ faces just staring at you. However, gradually the students got to know me better and became more participative and enthusiastic about speaking English in class. The youngest kids were brilliant in that they had excellent memories of spelling and the names of animals. The middle class was the most difficult as they had the least understanding. And the 6 class was great because I could do more complex things with them (nouns, verbs, questions, synonyms, etc) and they were able to get a basic understanding of it. They were all eager to learn and classes went really smoothly until the last few days and then it was all about drawing and playing.
Apart from teaching at school I offered 2 extra English classes for everyone, one in the morning and one in the evening and one German class as well. This was a great opportunity not only to get close to the kids in the village but also to the adults. I really enjoyed teaching.
I was amazed by the view of the mountains, the fields and the quiet and simple life in the small village. Staying with a family in the Rasuwa District completely immersed me in Nepalese culture. Not only was I eating their food, having cold showers, but even going to bed early....... since we were waking up every morning before sunrise which was a great experience. My family was not used to the idea of foreign volunteers, but the kids spoke enough English for us to communicate and for me to learn some Nepali.
Gopal was always there to help me out in what ever I needed and on my free days he made wonderful trips with me in the nearby mountains showing me the area. I appreciated all the kind invitations for food from all the different families and I will never forget the lovely farewell I got from each class and from my family.
The placement really becomes what you make out of it, so get involved, go and talk to the families, make friends, participate in activities and you will have the best time ever!
I will not attempt or even try to describe how I felt as a member of that community. I was truly part of something incredible and I was heartbroken when I had to leave. Their amazingly contented spirits will never leave me. I was transformed, literally, into a Nepali woman by my lovely host family and the other villagers.
This has been a month out of my life that I will never forget it has made me appreciate living in the moment and also realize that the luxuries we are so accustomed to in our daily lives do not contribute to putting a big smile on our faces but lovely friendly people do!! And I had a big smile on my face the whole time I was around these amazing people in this beautiful Village.
Since being back in Germany i have realized how much I had learned, lived and witnessed all throughout my time in Nepal. I left this country as a much more experienced person, who has been extremely lucky to teach and be part of the wonderful community in Chaurkharka and I can’t wait to go back again!
Thank you Hari and Gopal for this amazing adventure!

Namaste Everybody
I came to Nepal in August 2010 to travel around a bit but first of all to volunteer. I found Harikrishna Devkota through one of my friend(Peter) recommendation, and I am very thankful for that. From the very beginning the hospitable and easy attitude of Hari was a pleasure and a comfort in a strange land. I taught English in Shyabrubebsi, Rasuwa for two weeks.Lovely Dolma cooked us enough Daal Bhaat for a Nepali lifetime and "Mom" was always at hand for a laugh. High Himalayan community projects Nepal provided me an unforgettable experience; seeing the "real Nepal", whilst also allowing me to offer something back to the Nepali people. I owe a great debt of gratitude to Hari and High Himalayan community projects Nepal family. Thank you very much and hoping to see you 2011 again.

Dear Hari and Team
Thank you for all your help for arranging my placement, sightseeing & other adventure like trekking, rafting & the jungle safari. But more importantly thank you for being so flexible & supportive in arranging my early return from my placement at Dolakha Charikot. Like any great adventure, my time in Nepal has been filled with both ups and downs. I feel so lucky to have had a chance to share these experiences with the wonderful people I have met here. I truly felt like part of a family here in Nepal and I will miss you all when I return home. Special thanks to Hari for taking me trekking, sightseeing and being so warm friendly. Hoping back to Nepal soon.

"High Himalayan community project Nepal, has certainly changed my whole outlook on everything. English teaching worried me, but as they say, if you know how to speak the language, you’re qualified! So here I am with no previous experience, teaching Basic English to young children. You can have the opportunity to work with adorable babies as well! They have so much love to give and you can’t help but give it back. In the 2 months volunteering, not one day has gone by where I have regretted my decision to come to Nepal. The Nepalese are so friendly and helpful, if you just put the smallest smile on your face, you’ll get a bigger one back.”

NAMASTE!!
Volunteering was magical on so many levels. The partner is inspiring, well organized, passionate and a privilege to be aligned with. The opportunities available to impact directly on the lives of those in need are incredibly special, and the rewards are felt by the children, their communities and the volunteers themselves.
I will always have doors open for me here as well as beautiful memories. I hope to come back to Nepal with some kind of work involvement in which I can help more. This is difficult with a short volunteer placement and I hope to reach out to the children directly. I do feel that High Himalayan community project Nepal is a great way to get involved in this country and I would highly recommend it.
